Photo Idea Index: Places is a book with one intention: to get the reader to get out and photograph.
This book has very little technical reference. It suppose that the reader is familiar with photography.
Each chapter presents one topic, i.e. "Minimal 'scapes", "From above", "Human habitats", "Out of season", "Interior scapes", etc. Then come the photographs. At the end of each chapter, Jim Krause shows thumbnails of the pictures and gives some explanations regarding the picture. This may be about the circumstances under which he took the picture or how he manipulated it in Photoshop.
Jim Krause is, as he states by himself, "a designer who photographs". This is reflected in some of his pictures which are not "good" in the technical sense of photography. However, it is Krause's playful way to look at photography that inspires the reader to get a different attitude at what and how to photograph.
